The Elephant and the Rider

Jonathan Haidt’s “The Happiness Hypothesis: Finding Modern Truth in Ancient Wisdom” is a wonderful text and in it, he uses a metaphor of “The Elephant and The Rider” to understand our minds. In essence, your more “emotional” mind (a very unconscious part) is the elephant, and your more “rational” side, is like that little rider perched up on the elephant’s back. That rider may have the reins, but who do you think is actually in control?

It should be obvious, the Elephant is almost always going to win if there is a conflict in direction the two are going to go.

Unless you have a really friendly, cooperative elephant.

And YOU CAN TRAIN YOUR ELEPHANT TO BE YOUR BEST FRIEND.

One of the ways to train your elephant, is Trance work. Jonathan Haidt lists meditative states as one of the most useful tools for getting your “Elephant” and “Rider” on the same page.

How To Create "Good Luck"

Roy Sullivan, a United States park ranger in Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park is recognized by Guinness World Records as the person struck by lightning more times than any other human being. Between 1942 and 1977, Sullivan was hit by lightning on seven different occasions and survived all of them.

The odds of being struck by lightning seven times is estimated at 1:100007 or 1:1028 . For the non-mathematical among us, that’s a 1, with 28 more zeros behind it! And those are some pretty astounding odds.

Sound like a lucky man?

In fact, Roy’s life took a grim turn; he became exceedingly paranoid that the lightening strikes were “bad luck”, and was convinced they would occur again. People began to avoid him (for a lot of reasons), and he ended his own life at 71 over unrequited love.

Maybe “luck” is where you find it.

Fear and the Season of Food

Once at a Halloween Haunted House, I was so frightened by the costumed actors’ hands reaching out of the darkness and touching the back of my neck, that my mind went into autopilot-and I ran. Blinded by fear, focused only on putting distance between myself and those creepy hands, I hurled through the blackness. That is- until I finally slammed, face first, into a wall. I hit that wall so hard, I dropped to my knees.
